A TikTok video is a file on a host, a card in TikTok’s own search, and, often enough, a result on Google. Australians who treat the in-app flag as a delete key for all three will wait forever. The company will, in defined cases, take the file down. It will not chase every stitch, duet, screenshot compilation or live replay that the file has already become.
If you remember one distinction from this guide, make it this one: source takedown versus search takedown. Do the first on TikTok wherever the video, comment, live leftover or sound breaks the rules. Do the second so that the corpse stops appearing on a name search. The image and safety hub is the right door when the file is an intimate image, a deepfake, or involves a child. This piece is the ordinary TikTok map.
What TikTok will actually consider
TikTok’s Community Guidelines are long and the in-app categories are short. Map your facts to a guideline, not to a feeling.
Privacy and personal information. Home addresses, identity documents, school or workplace details used to identify a private person, and the classic walk-up-to-the-house video. TikTok is more willing here when the target did not film themselves, and less willing when the video is of a shopfront or a person who chose to go on camera.
Harassment and bullying. Repeated targeting and videos that invite others to contact a private person. A single rude comment is not harassment. A series that names a nurse or a neighbour and asks the audience to “find them” can be.
Impersonation. An account using your face, your trading name or a near-identical handle to pass as you. Report the account as well as the video. A disabled account often returns under a new suffix.
Intellectual property. If you own the copyright in the work being shown — your photograph, your recorded track — TikTok has an IP complaint flow. If you merely dislike a video about you, copyright is the wrong door.
Non-consensual intimate images and sexualised deepfakes. Do not start with a journalist. Use the in-app sensitive-content flow, use eSafety, and then use every other host. See non-consensual intimate images. If a child is in the frame, leave this guide.
What TikTok will not do, even if you ask politely and often: remove a true video of an argument in a public place because you lost it; unpublish a stitch that comments on a news article; or promise that a deleted video has vanished from every phone that already saved it.
Prepare the file before you open the report
TikTok’s URLs are fragile. Lives end. Videos are set to Friends. Sounds are reused. Build the dossier while the object is still visible.
- The exact URL, copied from the share sheet. If the same clip exists as an original, a duet and a stitch, that is three URLs.
- The username and the video ID. Usernames change. The numeric ID is what you will need when the display name becomes “user123456” overnight.
- A screenshot paused on the offending frame, with username, caption and date visible. Record a screen capture if the harm is in the audio.
- A logged-out capture of TikTok search for your name and the username. The in-app search card is a separate object. It can survive the file.
- The policy hook in one sentence. “This video shows my current home address.” “This live replay is an intimate image of me published without consent.” If you cannot write that sentence, you do not yet have a TikTok job.
A screen-recording of an intimate image is still an intimate image. Do not email it to friends “for backup”.
The in-app report, sounds and live leftovers
Start on the video. Tap the share flag, choose the most specific category, and submit from the targeted account where the flow allows it. Victim flows unlock extra fields.
Account report. Use this when the account itself is the product — impersonation, a dedicated harassment handle, a clone of a local shop. A video-level report will not retire an account that will simply post again tomorrow.
Comment and mention reports. Worth doing when the comment contains a mobile number, a home address or a threat. They will not take down the video above them.
Intellectual-property web form. Describe the work, your ownership and the URLs. A logo in the background of a café video is usually not a serious IP claim.
After you submit, TikTok will often say it cannot tell you the outcome in detail. That is normal. Check the URL logged-out. Screenshot whatever notice you do receive.
Sounds are how TikTok turns one video into fifty. A privacy or harassment takedown that ignores the sound will fail in a week. If the sound is a reuse of your recording — your voice note, your private conversation — say so in the report and in any eSafety complaint. If the sound is a commercial track, you are in the rights-holder’s territory. If the sound is someone else talking about you, the object is the video that used it, not the sound library.
Stitches and duets are new works. Report each URL. Lives are worse: the live ends, a replay is posted, a second account posts a screen recording. Capture the live URL if it is still up, then treat every leftover as a new object. The leftover, not the vanished live, is what a reviewer can still open.
Privacy, harassment and when eSafety is faster
Privacy reports work best when the video reveals something a stranger could not already see from the street: a residential address, a children’s school gate used to identify a family, identity documents, a medical setting. A video filmed at a public protest or a retail counter is a much harder claim, even when it is unpleasant.
Harassment reports work best when you can show targeting. One video naming a publican after a bad meal is close to a review. A series that follows a private person to their car and asks viewers to message them is a guideline problem. Show the series, not only the worst frame.
eSafety sits behind both of these when the conduct is adult cyber-abuse or image-based abuse. TikTok is a designated service. A removal notice is often faster than an in-app button that has already come back as “no violation”. Read what eSafety can actually order before you file a second identical report.
Search cards: TikTok’s, and Google’s
A successful video removal typically means the file is no longer playable at that URL. It does not mean the username has dropped out of TikTok search, or that Google has dropped the result.
TikTok search is its own index. After the file is gone, search your name and the username logged-out. If a card remains, report the account. This is not a general right to be forgotten. It is a freshness and safety product.
Google is a second index. A TikTok URL that has already been crawled will sit on a name search after the video is dead. That is a Google Search removal job, and it is why de-indexing versus deletion matters: deleting the file is not the same as deleting the card. Use Google’s outdated-content or personal-information tools once the source is actually gone. Do not file them first.
The in-app report fails when the video is a news clip, a political claim, a rude but lawful review, or a street argument you chose to have in public. In those cases the work moves to eSafety if the Act still applies, to a solicitor if you are in defamation or a real privacy claim, or to the other hosts if the same file has already left TikTok.
Agencies that promise to “wipe TikTok in 48 hours” are selling a product TikTok does not offer. There is no shame in paying someone to do tedious paperwork. There is shame in believing the paperwork is a spell.
A working sequence we recommend
- Capture the URL, the video ID, the sound ID if there is one, and a logged-out search card.
- Write the one-sentence policy hook. If you cannot, stop.
- Report the video and, if needed, the account, from the targeted login.
- Report stitches, duets and live leftovers as separate URLs.
- If the material is an intimate image, a threat, or a child is in the footage, file with eSafety the same day.
- Once the file is gone, file leftover Google and TikTok search cards. See de-indexing versus deletion if you need the vocabulary for that step.
- Diary a reminder in 14 days. Sounds and clones come back.
If you want the desk to look at a general question about the process, use contact. Do not send the video file, the live replay, or a zip of the comments. We publish method. We do not run your case.
